Too many canvas bags on hand?

Have a small yard and no place to put a garden? A yard that consists of clay and rocks (mine) or a yard that is unsuitable for a good garden?

I can't claim this is my idea, but while sitting in the waiting room at the eye doctor's the other day, I came across a great idea for using canvas bags (you know, the ones you're supposed to be using for your groceries instead of plastic, but keep forgetting to bring with you or leave in your trunk every time?). Grow a garden in them!

I thought this was an excellent idea. Not only is it portable so you can move it from place to place to follow the sunshine, but it also fits in very small spaces so even if you have a small yard and no room or just plain old can't get a garden to grow in your yard you can still have your garden!

Today, I planted 3 different kinds of lettuce and some salvia and chamomile. I have seeds for more herbs and am going to try some other vegetables as well after I see how well my first round turns out. Of course, I don't want to use all my canvas bags--I need something for groceries too--but at about 99 cents a pop, they cost far less than many of the planters I've bought in the past so well worth buying more if it works out.

Next up, hay bale planting! I must give that a try too.
